Steve Clements .Net and then some....

Hey, I am going to Rome this weekend with my girlfriend.  Seeing I have never been before I thought someone may have some tips on great places to eat, see etc. that are off the beaten track (so to speak).

I also wondered if non Italian speaking people had any problems over there? only language is English!

We are staying near Vatican City.

Thanks in advance.

Enjoy your trip to Rome. I lived in Italy (northern part of the country) for 4 years, many many years ago ;)

Don't worry so much about not speaking Italian, but heed this warning from a wealth of experience overseas (almost 18 years)...bring your phrase book and at least TRY to speak their language. They will be eternally greatful.

Case in point...I was in Paris years ago and there was a woman in front of me in the bakery trying to order some food in English, without even trying to speak French and then she got mad at the girl behind the counter when the girl didn't understand her.

I was pretty nervous when I went up front and stumbled through my order in probably the most horrible French ever spoken but to my amazement, the girl leaned forward and whispered "Thank you...I speak English if that will help you out"

All she wanted was for me to at least *try*. And speaking from experience travelling in Italy, Germany(though I actually speak "conversational" German), France, Belgium, and Holland I've found that to be the case more times than not...

I spent 2 days in Rome back in 1991. I got around pretty good with no knowledge of Italian (just high school latin, which doesnt really count anymore.)

Best thing you can do is bring some really good walking shoes. We walked EVERYWHERE and saw a lot of Rome. As for good places to eat and such, I'm not much help there, but everything I ate was great. Be sure to visit the Collosseum too. That was the highlight of my trip.
