Show Us Your Start Menu
I think a person's start menu says a lot about them. So show us your start menu! It's a simple Ctrl+Alt+Print Screen. Work Running Windows XP, the company is not overall aggressive about adopting the new OS even though we are a software company. Not running a standard skin (that's the Zune skin). Using IE, not Firefox. Must be a company thing? Windows Live Writer is the top program. I post once or twice a day from work during downtime, but I don't leave the application open. Battlestar Galactica Season Finale
If you have not seen the final episode yet, don't read any farther. The "obvious"? Okay, so I guess what they are trying to reveal is that all four characters hearing the music are Cylons (Tigh, Sam, Tory and Chief) and Starbuck makes five. Starbuck's re-appearance means she survived death and while she was dead the location of Earth was revealed. Right? Because I am a little confused from the high of Starbuck still being alive after pulling this massive scam on the media. The conspiracy Okay, so ......

Hey Vista CableCard, Price Does Matter
I absolutely want to drop my free HD-DVR from Charter for a Vista Media Center with CableCard support. The ability to record to a hub that can be viewed from any Xbox 360, Zune, Portable Media Center, phone, etc is exciting. But... Niveus Media's offering starts at $3199 and that's without the CableCard adapter. It looks like that will run an extra $1500. That's way out of my price range, and I am a gadget freak with a decent income. That thing is built for Bill Gates and friends. Velocity Micro's ......

Windows - The Most Secure OS
Symantec found that Microsoft Windows is the most secure operating system. This is based on the number of patches found and the time to patch them. Microsoft Windows Red Hat Linux Apple Mac OS X Hewlett Packard HP-UX Sun Solaris Despite the latest TV ads ridiculing the security in Vista with a Matrix-like Agent playing the UAC in Vista, Apple (QuoteChart-->) has nothing to brag about. Symantec found 43 vulnerabilities in Mac OS X and a 66 day turnaround on fixes. Surprise, Microsoft Listed as Most ......

Choose Exchange Over Windows Live Mail
After about a year of waiting I finally got my invite to Windows Live Mail. (Okay, so I didn't really care that much.) What I got is some awful hybrid between Hotmail and Yahoo Mail. Nothing revolutionary here. Just a forced update to the ever aging Hotmail. Granted I didn't spend much time with it, so if you think you can change my mind, please do so. Unfortunately, this is also the same interface you get with Office Live. Consider using a hosted Microsoft Exchange server. Prices start around $7 ......

42 Web Design Resources
Smashing Magazine has posted their 42 picks for design magazines you must read. The article doesn't really provide any type of overview, it's really just a list with a quick image snapshot of the upper left corner of each site. What I found most interesting was viewing how aesthetically pleasing each site is. I mean come on. These are design sites, so they should be the best of the web. Some are great, some ugly. But that's just my opinion. I know the point of these sites is content, but I just can't ......

Dumbest Man on the Internet Found
This post is in response to the article "Why Linux will not displace Windows". (I have posted the entire comment just in case it gets taken down from ZDNet.) You are kidding arent you ? Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ? That sounds preposterous to me. If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not ......

This site,, is great.  It's just a bunch of stories people submit of the crazy things they believed when they were going up.

Digg - You Are Not Logged In
I'm not sure what the problem is, but I am constantly having to re-login to Digg. I'll digg one story and then less than a minute later I'll get the "You are not logged in." message when trying to digg another story. It doesn't always happen, but it's frequent enough to annoy me. The problem happens at home and at work, in both Firefox 2 and IE7. Anyone else having this problem ......

DirecTV Ripped Me Off
Their HD service does not work, and if you sign up, you are stuck. It's not the hardware, it's the software, which many people are complaining about, and DirecTV admits is faulty. I think my complaint letter to the Better Business Bureau sums it up nicely. Notice how their attitude changes on the final comment. Even though they told me they would not take back the equipment, they are penalizing me for not sending back the equipment. Complaint Description We signed up requesting a HD DVR that worked ......

March Madness and the Kuhl Curse
I've been invited to my first bracket competition of the year. And like every other year, I fully expect to finish dead last. No matter what I try, I always get screwed. For example, this year I picked North Carolina to go all the way. Which means sometime before the first game the entire team will come down with the stomach flu and be replaced by a pick-up team from the Institute of No Depth Perception ......

Vista Media Center with CableCard from Dell
I never would have expected Dell to be a feature leader and win the race to ship the first Vista Media Center with CableCard support, but they just may do it. PC Magazine has received the XPS 410 with an ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner for review. It's not shipping just yet, so they might not be the first to ship, but at least someone is getting close. I have seen some rumors about Sony shipping in April or VidaBox shipping in March. While I haven't heard anything about HPs DECs getting the upgrade. ......

Robot Revolution Began in 1979
Looks like our future robot overlords actually started their revolution to overthrow their human creators way back in 1979. Robert Williams was the first man ever killed by a robot. On January 25, 1979, Williams climbed into a storage rack at the Ford Motor’s Flat Rock casting plant to retrieve a part because the parts-retrieval robot malfunctioned. Suddenly, the robot reactivated and slammed its arm into Williams’ head, killing him instantly. Some people will say it was an accident. But I know better. ......

Add-ins for Windows Live Writer
It's been a while since I checked the state of add-ins for Windows Live Writer, and there are quite a few now. Usage is easy, just click on the Insert Video link, then copy and paste the link into the text box. Alternatively, you can now just paste the video link into the blog entry and the plugin will do the rest. Now fully compatible ......

There are lots of applications out there that will convert the Microsoft DVR-MS format (Media Center recording format) into standard WMV so it can be put on your Zune. CBS thinks the PS2 is the hot new game system
In this week's episode of Rules of Engagement, one of the guys gets his hands on a brand new, super hard to find game system, that he pays $500 for and has to bribe his cousin who works at a toy store. They never mention the game system by name, but they seem to be eluding to the PS3. What they are actually playing on screen though is the PS2. Are you telling me not one person on the show knew the difference? Or is CBS just that cheap? Despite the marketing photo, no orgies have taken place in the ......

New Microsoft Developer Site for Beginners
Microsoft has launched a new site, Beginner Developer Learning Center. This adds to, but does not replace, the Express sites and Coding4Fun. Much of the content seems to be copied from other Microsoft sources. However it has been put together in a very clear, step-by-step, learning path to get started. Overall, it looks like Microsoft has done a good job organizing the information. Their target audience, if you judge by the photos, would seem to be kids. And this will probably turn some people away ......
