Murray Gordon Flash a-ah! Savior of the universe...

HomeAndOfficeCatalogIcon I’m in the market to get my DotNetNuke site hosted with a discount hosting provider.

But looking for one seems to be a never ending journey.

Does anyone have any suggestions for affordable hosting for a personal DotNetNuke website?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Murray

Here's the pricing at DotNetPark.com:

The Most Popular
300Mb Total space
8000Mb bandwidth
3 MS SQL databases
$17 a month

The Cheapest
100Mb Total space
2000Mb bandwidth
1 MS SQL database
$7 a month

For Professionals
700Mb Total space
18000Mb bandwidth
4 MS SQL databases
$25 a month

Are those good prices? It seems like the total space is pretty low. Even Gmail gives you 2GB of free space for email. Shouldn't hosting provide you with atleast that? Maybe I'm being naive.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.

Thanks,
Murray

WebHost4Life.com looks good.

Their $4.95 plan looks good, but no .NET or MSSQL so that's out.

I don't see anything about DotNetNuke or Community Server. It would be awesome if they set that up for you like DotNetPark.

$9.95 mo.
2GB space shared with MSSQL

$19.95 mo.
3GB space shared with MSSQL

Paul, thanks for your post.

Yes, since DNN requires an active connection to the database, I need to look for a host which can provide a fast and reliable connection.

My choice at ASPHostCentral.com has been truly an amazing hosting experience. The server's speed, performance and realibility is top class and my dotnetnuke's site is running at full speed.

I certainly have no problems in recommending their service to all you guys....

I've used PowerDNN for hosting and I would highly recommend not going with them. They have torn apart the DNN community with their back handed tactics and continue to stick a knife in the back of the DNN community a whole.

I would love to recommend ASPHostCentral.com (http://www.asphostcentral.com) to host your DNN site and this is simply because:

1. They always optimize their server and your site will run faster
2. They do have knowledgeable staffs, who can aid you in upgrading your DNN, in case you need help
3. They always provide the latest DNN installation and they always keep up-to-date with whatever that is available on the market.
4. They do provide 1-Click installation of DNN from their control panel.

I tried Webhost4life several years ago and was very slow. Maybe it better now. I recently tried EasyCGI and was a nightmare. The auto tool install tool did not work and they do not support DNN at the root of the hosting (requires a /DNN directory). Based on the feedback from this blog and some forum postings I went with iHostASP and was up and running with two portals within an hour. Follow the tutorial videos and you'll probably have it running much quicker!

# re: Any suggestions on where to host DotNetNuke website?

Ok, I used this list as the base of my research, so I'm going to give a nice post-back of my experience.

I got an account with almost every one mentioned here so far. None of them were all that great. GoWebsite.com had the most "stuff" for you. Seriously, there were hundreds of auto-install applications. Unfortunately DNN crashed on me several times during installation - and removing a portal somehow deleted the entire directory... which wouldn't be a big deal if I coudl ever hook the db back up again!

iHostASP was pretty nice, except their system timed-out on me half way through installation. Their site said they'd do it for me if I just put in a ticket. I did so, but didn't hear back for another 14hrs. Which was still faster than the gowebsite.com ticket.... which has been open for 2 days.

The people at websecurestores.com actually had the demo crash! I told them about it and they fixed it right away. I then got into the demo, but it was just a sample fof the HELM manager.... with no options. That doesn't do much for me, since I simply wanted to see what kind of tools were out there. They had.... um, how much I owed. Nice. However... they were very fast to respond and very nice about everything. Since DNN is pretty much a managment interface on its, you really don't need anything but fast responses.

Finally, I went to GoGrid.com Now, this isn't a DNN host. It is a cloud-server. Basically, it is a bunch of virtual machines. You tell them what kind of machine you want, pick the OS, the processor, the DB, etc... and in 3 minutes you have a full server and a pile of IP addresses. It's about $20 a month for the lower level windows box.

I remote desktoped into it, downloaded the free install files, added an empty DB to SQLexpress and did a standard install in about 30 minutes. I spent more than that filing out credit card forms on the others!

Now, I usually use GoGrid when I hire subcontractors I don't know that well or new interns. Basically, I can give them a full machine off my network and give them an admin password. They do the work, if it blows up, I just delete the entire machine. :) Gotta love that.

Since I happen to have a rack and a bunch of boxes - and like the physical control of them being there - I only use GoGrid.com for that, but they are really pretty good.

So, my advice to everyone here.... if you REALLY want to have a DotNetNuke server, don't pay $7/month for a folder on some unknown machine shared with who knows who... kick in the extra $15/month and get an entire damn server! Or .find someone else on this message board who wants to go in on it with you. I've got to say, I'm a bit of a control freak and I REALLY like to be able to go directly to the server and install stuff in 30 seconds, scheduling backups in a snap, installing other stuff, it's a whole machine. If you can't get $20/month in AdWords with an entire server, you're in the wrong business! :)

So, just to shut me up.

websecurestores.com - Very nice people with fast response
gowebsite.com - lots of stuff.... I'm not sure if any humans work there. :)
www.ihostasp.net - nice people. slow response. decent interface (HELM) with a small number of options.

Oh yeah... www.ihostasp.net will actually add your IP to the trusted hosts on their router so you can link to your SQL Server databases via SQL Studio on your own machine. All the others refused. That is a big bonus if you want to be able to run your development on your local machine.

GoGrid.com Well, it's not the same. If you think about it, though... it is seriously worth it. I think they have a 30day free trial. Give it a shot.

They are one man show company and they are just scam company.

Do not use ASPHostCentral.com to host your DNN site and this is simply because:

1. They don't have knowledgeable staff, who can not aid you in upgrading your DNN.

2. The person who runs asphostportal and asphostcentral seems to have a multiple personality disorder.

www.asphostcentral.com and www.asphostportal.com are two same hosting website

WebHost4Life sucks major ass. While once an OK company, in the last few months they've outsourced their live chat help to India and began migrating sites to a new server. My site was down for about a week during the migration. When I alerted them to the problem they took a couple days to get it up. Once up, it was a month-old version of my site, updated files were gone forever. STAY AWAY FROM THESE JERKS. They wouldn't even apologize for anything...

Webhost4life is the absolute worst hosting provider that I have ever had. When I first joined it was a Russian company that new how to support it and it was pretty good. A canadian company took it over and it was the worst thing to ever happen. I was down 2 weeks straight with no concern. My site has been down 12 hours now and they haven't even responded. This is the absolutely worst provider ever. Do not do business with them. I looking to move now, which is how I found my way here.
