WebDeploy-Object Reference error
This probably doesn't apply to all situations but if you are using Unleash-It (formerly WebDeploy) and get the blasted object reference not found as this discussion pertains to, you may need to edit the default profile to include *.asax files. It took me a few minutes to figure it out but at least I am not the only one having the problem.

If you are looking for a package that contains the best of breed .NET development utilities, the DotNetToolPak is the answer. It has the ASPNETVersionSwitcher utility from Dennis Bauer, Cropper (an amazing screen capture utility), NDOC, NUnit, Reflector, Regulator from our great friend Roy O., and Unleash-It (formerly the artist known as Price-errr, formerly known as WebDeploy). You can get more details here ......

Harsh reaction to Telligent's descision to sell Community:Forums
Some are vocally opposed to Telligent's decision to sell Community:Forums. I am in favor of Telligent's actions because it will only make other open source forum applications better to compete with Telligent's C:F. I am not the only one either; see this. ......

Image Processing
I have been playing around with System.Drawing and System.Drawing.Imaging quite a bit in the past few days. I didn't quite know what to expect but the libraries are very powerful. I was able to take 250,000 images which were in the 320x240 format and resize them to a low res 256x192 and a high res 640x480 in about five hours. All the images were photographic quality and they look great in both of the new formats. I did, however, notice a very small amount of distortion in some of the images if a ......

GotDotNet Workspaces
I know that GotDotNet plans to eventually release the source code for the site but I would think they would just go ahead and do it all ready to stop the bleeding of developer to SourceForge. The workspaces definitely have their problems but I would be willing to invest the time and money to mature the project and correct the problems it currently has. Does anyone know of any other GotDotNet-like applications that are open source? I really would like to look under the hood ......

The 49ers
Well, for the 1st time since 1977 the 49ers were shut out. I am a life-long fan of the 49ers and to see them in this state is so sad for me. With a history that includes Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, Steve Young, Terrell Owens, and on and on and on, an owner that puts such drastic cost cutting measures in effect to the point that the entire franchise is a standing joke is just ridiculous. I knew things were going downhill when Mooch was fired after his first playoff win. And now we have Dennis ......

I have decided to use the for the .NET content site I am creating. All I need now is a good, reliable hosting company. Any suggestions? I don't have a lot of money to throw at this but I have enough that I can afford a dedicated server and don't have to shop for free services. I also have a previous employer that I could possibly 'rent' rackspace and bandwidth from and know that it is safe. I will investigate all suggestions, though, so fire away ......

Smart Neural Networks
I found this while searching for some reading material. Neural networks really are smart. There is a load of them out there. I found one that could pick any animal in the world by asking questions but the site can guess almost anything! Amazing!

One of RSS's Missing Feature
I think one of the things that RSS is missing is a GUID for each news item. I subscribe to most of the feeds on MSDN but not all of them. So, if something is posted that is Visual Studio-specific will probably get posted on the MSDN feed, the Visual Basic feed, the Visual C# feed, and the .NET Framework feed. So, I will have to mark each of these four items as read. Why not just give the news item a GUID and when that GUID is marked as read, it will be marked as read everywhere. Just my $0.02 ......

Multi-Level IBS Tabs
I kept reading about the difficulties of adding a second layer of tabs for IBuySpy but it really isn't that difficult. Here is the overview: Add a ParentId field to tabs. Set all top level tabs' ParentId to 0. Set all child tabs to the corresponding TabId of it's parent. Load the tabs with the ParentId=0 into one datatable. Load the tabs with the ParentId>0 into another datatable. Create a datarelation from the parent table to the child table. Load the tabs as appropriate. I will post the code ......

Anyone interested in a Knoxville/Nashville nerd dinner. I know the pool is a little shallow compared to the bigger markets but surely there must be enough to get this going.

New .NET Content Site
I purchased two domain names recently that I plan to create a .NET-related public content site kinda like a wiki. Anyone will be able to post content but I will moderate the content. I would be liable, after all. I will most likely have public forums, weblogs, articles, etc. The domain names were and I think I will use the 360dotnet domain because the dotnetprojex site would be more useful in other contexts. I would gladly accept any help in getting the site up and ......

In My Toolbox
I have found the best application ever. It is called WMRecorder. The app is great. I love watching the MSDN webcasts but most are on demand. The WMRecorder allows you to 'tape' the webcast as it streams and watch it later. Of course, you can also burn it to CD to listen to in the car or to DVD and watch it on the tele. SWEET! I love it. The price wasn't free but hey, a Tivo will cost you +$200 so $30 isn't too bad. Here is the link ......

Visual Interdev and Windows 2003

Has anyone had any problems running Visual Interdev 6.0 on Windows 2003 Server? Every time I try to load a project from the web the IDE crashes. After the crash, however, I can open the IDE again and load the project from the drive nd it works fine. This is driving me crazy!

If you are a big audio book fan like I am, you should REALLY check out They have a sale this week and ANY audiobook you want, you can buy for $10! They have subscription services available so that you can get any two audiobooks per month for $20 but the $10 sale caused me to exceed my budget and buy 15. I could get free books for referring you but I won't because the service sells itself. Check it out ......

I used to have a DVD-RW Drive
Well, about a month ago I bought the Sony DRU-700A Double Layer Internal DVD-RW Drive for my personal pc. It was about a $200 purchase and I have been very happy with it so far. Anyway, I use it as a cheap solution to back up all my important stuff but this morning the backup failed so I went to investigate the problem. The disk was laying on top of the PC and in it's place was a piece of cheese, Kraft, I am sure. Now, I don't know who exactly did it but my prime suspects are THE boy (Bryant, age ......

YetAnotherForum integrated with Portal?
Has anyone out there successfully integrated the Yet Another Forum application with DotNetNuke or IBuySpy? If you have I would like to know if you had any problems with it. I think I will attempt it just to know if it can be done. There are plenty of instances of the ASP.NET forums being integrated but the YAF application is simply better IMHO.

.NET Installers
I feel the need to rant! Have you seen the prices of InstallShield or Wise? What a ripoff! Someone in the development community needs to put an end to this! InstallShield X Premier will cost you a very hefty $2,500 and a gold maintenance plan will tack on an additional $1,800! That comes to nearly $4,300 JUST so you can have very professional installations for your applications. That is all that Installshield does! That and nothing more. Before you start shooting hate mail, I know that VS.NET does ......

Gmail Invitations up for grabs...
I have six Gmail invitations up for grabs but they aren't free. I want to hear stories of an IBuySpy/DotNetNuke/Rainbow/etc implementation you have done in a real world environment. I am even more interested in portals you have written to replace the previously mentioned apps and the approach you used. I will give the invites to the best stories. Email them to me or post them here. Sorry, all the Gmail invites are gone. Thanks for the stories ......

Picking a mentor
I have a little advice for everyone when picking a mentor to help with code reviews, tight situations, etc. I selected a mentor that is VERY familiar with the existing code base and I was sure that he would be able to answer any questions that I might have. I am not sure that I really selected him or if he was thrown at me for the fun of it since he has was intimately involved with every project I have done. To make a long story short, the guy is a great coder, has a good mind for architecture, standard ......
