Wow, looking at my editors site, there he is holding one of my latest books. Wow! Nice to see it on paper ... can't wait to get my copy!!!! :) I have worked on three books in the last year and a half and they are all coming out this week and next. I can't tell you how good this feels! IT'S HALLOWEEN (just in case you didn't know). My kids were so excited, that they woke up at 4am! No kidding. So, what are the costumes this year? My daughter (7) is a ballerina, my youngest son (6mon) is a clown, and ......

An excellent editorial from Charles Petzold on the state of programming in the Microsoft world. I really enjoyed this read. Take a look.
Friend and former co-worker,
Laurence Moroney,
has put out an article this month on the Windows Communication Foundation (WCF).
John Wiley, Pearson, and some other publishers have come together to sue Google over Google Print - a service that is putting books online. The publishers are stating that this is a copyright infringement. As an author, I would tend to agree with the publishers here. You write all this content to be packaged as a book or sold as an e-book - not for Google to take and provide to the world for free. I really hope the publishers are successful in their endeavors ......
We are looking for some Sr. and Jr. Oracle developers in Denver (GREAT COMPANY). If you are interested, let me know via the Contact section of this blog (label header as ORACLE POSITION). I'm not 100% sure on relocation costs at this point ... but I think that is not an option at this moment. Financial services experience a big plus.
Bad umps led to the defeat of the Cards in the game against the Astros yesterday. They were calling all sorts of silly calls: bad strike zones, calling people out on first when they were safe, etc. etc. You would think that bad calls would be OK if it was across both teams, but it was really all against the Cards ... What a joke! ... ok ... enough ranting. Back to work ......
Whew! In addition to the Professional ASP.NET 2.0 book I have coming out this month, I also co-authored two other books coming out this month: Professional C# 2005 & Professional VB 2005 Both these books were reworked for the lastest release of both of these languages. The table of contents for the Professional C# 2005 is as follows: PART I: THE C# LANGUAGE.1. .NET Architecture. 2. C# Basics. 3. Objects and Types. 4. Inheritance. 5. Operators and Casts. 6. Delegates and Events. 7. Memory Management ......
Scott Hanselman discussed this earlier, but the XmlDataSource control has a bug in it. When working with the XPath capablities of the control (which you will do pretty much every time you use the control), the control will throw an exception when working with XML data that includes namespaces/prefixes. I recently encountered this problem when I was working with some of the XML data coming from the Amazon APIs. One possible fix is to apply a XSLT stylesheet to strip the namespaces and prefixes from ......
Though I have no need for any telephony capabilities, I liked listening to all the computer created voices on this site as it reminded me of one of my favorite movies from the 80's! http://www.tmaa.com/tts/com... When are they going to remake this great movie ......
For those that haven't heard, Office 12 will have a 'Save As PDF' feature. Finally! Here is a press discussion from Microsoft on the topic:

The first article in a series I am doing for MSDN just came online. The ASP.NET Jumpstart series will run an ASP.NET hobbyist through the creation of their own application/starter kit. This first article, Introduction to the Media Share Library Starter Kit, is an introduction to the starter kit and runs you through installing and configuring the starter kit. ALSO, at the top of the page, you will notice that you can download the starter kit yourself to install on your machine. To steal from myself, ......
http://www.eweek.com/articl... EWeek reporting that Eolas won the first round of their fight with Microsoft. Eolas' patent was just reaffirmed by the US Patent and Trademark Office as valid - a patent on how external items are used inside of a browser. In the article, Microsoft admits that this is bad news for them and states that a Microsoft required redesign would “potentially breaking large numbers of Web pages in the process.” ......
This is an exciting month for me as my book, Professional ASP.NET 2.0, will finally make it out. I started working on this book at the beginning of 2004 ... yes, that is right ... 2004! This lead to a release of the ASP.NET 2.0 Beta Preview book which was based upon Beta 1 code. Since then, I re-worked the table of contents so that it would fit nicely in the 1000+ page Professional model that makes a Wrox book so good and asked some good ASP.NET authors out there to help me finish the project. The ......
