New Laptop Toy

Saturday, September 15, 2007 12:22 PM

So I bought...I mean, my company bought me, a new toy to use with my laptop today: a Microsoft Wireless Notebook Presenter Mouse 8000 (possibly the longest mouse name ev-AR)!

I'm doing a few code camp presentations coming up, and I've always wanted one of these, so this was a great opportunity to pick one up...well, that and Best Buy had it on for like $40 off.

This mouse has a bunch of awesome features that ALL mice should have:

Seriously, this should be STANDARD for all mice here in 2007! I have another Microsoft mouse that I love, but you just know that the battery is in a constant state of losing power...and popping out the batteries every time isn't realistic. Great feature...should be on all wireless mice.

Blue Tooth Receiver
Although it still relies on a USB hub for connectivity to non-BlueTooth enabled laptops, the fact that it comes with a BlueTooth receiver is awesome. Now I have blue-tooth connectivity for a number of devices and not just for my mouse. If you're getting a wireless mouse, why get a standard mouse-only receiver? Remember: high cohesion, loose coupling...

Ok, so those are the feature that all mice should have. But in addition, this mouse gives you the ability to switch the mouse from screen-pointer mode to presentation-aid mode with a click of the button. Built into the mouse is a red laser pointer, volume controls, and buttons that map to power-point controls.

In addition, the mouse software includes the zoom feature, which will let you magnify an area of the screen (which can be really helpful for presentations obviously).

So far, so good. I'm very happy with my new little mouse, but we'll see how it plays out when I put it to the first real test at the end of October.
