Sometimes the stupidest things get reported as news...

Like this story, about a man who got hit by lightning. The title of the story is "IPods and thunderstorms don't mix, doctors warn."

It then goes on to explain that a man who was running in a rainstorm (as in jogging, not simply running for cover from the rain or anything) got struck by lightning that actually struck a nearby tree first and then vertically jumped to him. He happened to be wearing an IPod at the time, and the electricity shot up the headphones and damaged his ears. Of course, there were other parts of his body damaged as well.

A quote from one of the doctors:

"But we just suggest that if you are unlucky enough to be hit by lightning while listening to anything with earphones, you may be more likely to do yourself some damage."

Are you kidding me?! Gee, it looks like rain...I better take off my IPod because if I get hit by lighning while wearing it I'm in BIG trouble now! I can't believe this got published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

What about the other things this man was wearing? Maybe the material in his shirt should be made known since it obviously didn't protect him well enough from electrical burns. Or what about his shoes...what role did they play?

Or how about, instead of talking about IPods in thunderstorms, we make a suggestion that people SHOULDN'T RUN IN THUNDERSTORMS PERIOD!?

I dunno...just a thought. I love how media likes to throw buzzwords into stories just so they get noticed...

All they do is try to undo someone else's fun. They find a parade someone else is raining on and join in, or occasionally find their own parade and start raining on it. Leeches.

It is surprising that the New England Journal of Medicine would have spouted off such drivel. 7/11/2007 11:43 PM | Lorin Thwaits
