Excuse me... Yes you... Could you please scrape my gray matter off the floor and shove it back in my skull? Sorry for the mess, but I just had my brain turned inside out while reading an article introducing the Semantic Web.

I'm excited about the Semantic Web, but I'm not quite sure why yet. Right now I feel like a monkey who just got hold of a Rubic's Cube. I do a lot of work with the identification of text within documents, so this seems to be a very natural fit. The hard part is learning the rules (or lack of) in RDF.

In my quest for more knowledge, I came across an open source tool called Protege. It seems to be a wonderful tool. If only I could figure out what to do with it... At first I thought of it as simply an Ontology designer, but the more I am using it, it is truly an RDF editor. As I often do, I feel like I am at the foot of a giant mountain of information.

I actually started using Protege, and it does make developing RDF easier. My biggest problem is that it is a Java app and I am not a fan of Java. Some of the features are not immediately intuitive, but once you get use to it, it is not terrible. One big problem, is that I incorrectly created an instance of a class, and now the app is unstable when I open that project. Even if I could figure out what I did wrong, I'm not sure I could get to the source and fix it.

Anyway, if you want to spill your gray matter on the floor for a while I recommend reading up on the Semantic Web, RDF, RDFS, and DAML+OIL. I believe the Semantic Web is in the very near future once we bang out all the ideologies and figure out how to make money out of it. You might as well bone up now.
