Another year has passed, and I’m still at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  The track opened on Sunday, and yesterday was the first day of practice open to both rookies and previous drivers.  We took a walk through the pits and I got a few good shots.

The scoring tower.

The tires actually have the Speedway logo and say “INDY 500” on them.  Never seen that before.

Michael Andretti is back this year.  I tried to get a good shot of him, but didn’t really succeed.

This year’s pace car.  Not the ones that you’ll see on the road, but the actual pace car.

Danica Patrick is back, but not doing so well so far.

Overall speeds are down from last year by a little bit.  Not sure why that is since there haven’t been any rules changes or changes to the track.  You’d think that speeds would actually be up, since the teams have had a year now to get used to these rules and keep tweaking the cars.  Danica was very slow yesterday at just over 220 and 21st quickest.  That’s even slower than she was on day one of her rookie practice last year.  ESPN said yesterday that she was the “biggest disappointment of the day”.  Clearly this team has some work to do.  But there’s lots of rain in the forecast for the next few days, so we may have seen just about all the speed we’re likely to see before Pole Day on Saturday.
