Money:

Having been to various events across US and UK and been charged various amounts for web access it got me thinking that shouldn't it be free?

My reasoning is that if I use it , it costs nothing, if I don't use it it still costs nothing!  What the usual argument is revolves around support. OK then lets charge for support!

Better still lets not. Why? Well when I book a room it comes with a number of things - a bed, bedsheets, towels, shampoo, conditioner, bubble bath, TV and tea making stuff all for 'free' or rather built in the price. So why not wireless or internet access? Surely in this modern time we should expect it to be free. It costs nothing once its in - well it costs the same whether peoplke use it or not.

Couldn't the same be said of local calls?
They (hotel\motel) have the lines, local calls are 'fee' but yet, many places still charge for you for them. I can understand a wireless fee easier than that.

When a hotel installs a wireless network for the purpose of making money then it eliminates the "it still costs the same if i use it or not" factor. Hotels that charge for it, wouldn't have it in if they were not charging for it. You go to a hotel to be looked after, but at a price. You pay high pices for a power shower, fresh towels every day, 24 hour room service and bar, and pay over the odds for a meal that has been cooked to perfection with all the finest products. The less you pay, the less you get in the hotel industry.

I do however agree that the internet should be freely available wherever you go, and in my Leeds Hotel (Golden Lion Hotel), we consider free wireless as a part of the room charge.

I fully agree with your comments. My point, a little tounge in cheek, is that I like to have all the 'cost' up front! I recently stayed in Leominster Spa at a large chain hotel where the internet connection was £14.99 a night and dog slow (in fact unusable)! I complained, I refused to pay at checkout and was told I had to pay and fill in a complaint form. Still waiting for a response. So I now don't stay at hotel chains with names that ryhme-ish with Parrot or Parriot!
When I'm next in Leeds I'll look you up!
