I had the benefit of attending last years Citrix iForum in Edinburgh when they had a Business/IT Directors Track that was chaired or organised by Rene Carayol. From that I have kept an eye on his web site and suscribed to his updates. From this I recently received the following:

 

Leadership Essentials

 

1 It is essential as the Inspired Leader to select talent better than yourself! Ensure they are A players, as you will want them to recruit talent better than themselves. Most B players do not have the required confidence or self belief and consequently tend to recruit C players, and C players recruit D players. Stop the rot now!

2 Effective leaders exude a strong sense of confidence and drive to inspire others - Optimism is not a mood swing but a way of life for the best leaders.

3 "Hiring diverse, even eccentric people, mixing them up in unexpected ways, and asking them to do something unusual can prompt surprising ideas" - Business Week 2002

4 In order to achieve your stated goals the first and most difficult step is to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality.

5 Ambition is apparent in all great leaders what separates the Inspired Leader is their ability to put the ambitions of the organisation above their own personal ambitions.

6 Most executives are overworked and far too busy. It is important to challenge your workload on a regular basis and be brutal with what no longer needs your attention and learn to delegate.

My boss always says, and it may sound simplistic but its true:

Leaders lead.

Many organizations try to create leaders where maybe they should just observe and see who the leaders are that they already have.
