Found this sidebar tool advertised on noahh's blog.

Thanks for the info noaah

Check out http://www.desktopsidebar.com/.

The other app that i use very often is YZDock (Screenshot, more screens). I have tried the various Dock applications including MobyDock, Object Dock etc. so far I have found YZ Dock to be the most configurable, but its one those orphaned projects.

Download YZDock here

G'day Tariq, thanks for the links.

I have been using desktop sidebar for two weeks, and I like the dock, but now I'm wondering: isn't there some overlap in functionality between dock, sidebar, start menu and task bar, and how have you set your screen up? What sort of things do you have on the dock, and what sort on the sidebar? Do you use the Windows "Quick Launch"?

Cheers, Thomas (aka confused)

I was trying out the sidebar.
I may use it infrequently in the future.
I dont say that to imply that there is something wrong with the sidebar, its just that to me its functionality is a bit redundant (like you said). For instance Outlook 2003 shows me the mail alerts, RSS syndication I do via Intravnews in outlook, I dont really require something to scroll pictures.

Currently my desktop runs yzdoc, trillian (for instant messaging), and Getright (as download manager), default windows start menu and taskbar.

Something else that i find of great value is execommand i dunno where to find the installation now, I can send you the setup if you require. What it lets you do is to configure commands that when typed in the window run menu would launch applications.

For instance to start firefox i have a command ff.exe etc

Fantastic! I didn't know this existed for XP! I've needed a new computer for a long time now; but postponed it when I found out that Windows Vista was going to have a sidebar. Now I just have to decide whether to wait for a dual-core processor, lol
