Today Google announced Google Gears at their Global Developer conference.

The blurb says ...

Ok so it doesn't take a genius to work out that it's a client side data cache.

Client side data caches are not new and architecturally speaking it's always cool to make 'chunky' data calls because a 'chatty' application will reduce the performance and the users experience of an application and that's it! do not pass go do not design a 3 tier application with everything on the client.

Gears is about 'To do' list data that gets updated pretty regularly and there isn't lots of it. For instance a list of house call a plumber has to make in a day. I can see that it would be handy to hold data, say like a price list? but the idea with caches is to keep them small, light and as uncomplex as you can.

Another reason why you don't want to much data in your client is because that will mean data will need to bring it's best friend and that's business logic. Changes to data means validation and as you can see we are straight into business logic territory, then suddenly the notion of doing lots of business logic isn't that attractive on a client specially in Javascript no fluffy workflow here and it's all interpreted and suddenly the idea of keeping anything other that Mr/Mrs/Ms data becomes pretty much unattractive as you don't want your funky web page to slwo to a crawl which was the very reason you considered a client side cache in the first place.

Google don't hype Gears to much please, it does have it's place but it has limitations and these need to be spelt out loud and clear something that is a new notion in Googleland.

And just a thought, people can talk about SQL Server Mobile if they wish but all I can say is that the humble text file, the original client side cache, has been around a bit longer.
