Windows 10–that was easy
Windows Update seemed stuck on some files. I found KB971058 (How do I reset Windows Update components?) which had a bunch of suggestions. The one I tried was: Delete the qmgr*.dat files. To do this, at a command prompt, type the following command, and then press Enter: Del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Down... although I did also delete some empty folders from the %systemroot%\SoftwareDistri... - always best to try two things at once so you don’t know what ......

Windows 10 technical preview–where’s Metro gone?
Two problems have appeared: Windows Update and Recovery is unresponsive – the page just show the circular hourglass thingy (what is it called?); also prevents shutting down Windows and I have to force it. Start menu no longer works – just have the standard Windows 7 UI. Some would say that was an improvement but I wouldn’t regard them as being particularly helpful.
